The aim of the course is to develop the skills necessary to explore, design and construct intelligently responsive kinetic structures and systems. The idea is to create spaces and objects that can physically reconfigure themselves to meet changing needs. Emphasis will be placed upon hands-on experience of advanced design processes ranging from the conceptual idea to fabrication. The course will provide practical foundations in advanced technological tools that can be used for physical prototyping and construction. A full-scale working design project will serve as the means to exploring CAD-CAM, the physical properties of real materials, complex surface-structure experimentation and basic mechanical motions. Students will work in groups of 3 on particular design projects of their choosing that are integral with the overall design of the site. A complete physical working object will be requited for successful completion of the course.
